Edgar Allen Poe

Born in 1809 in Boston Massachusetts Edgar Allen Poe's father deserted the family soon after. A few years later, Edgar's mother died and John Allen and his wife Frances took in the three-year-old boy.

In 1827 he left home and went on to become a literary critic, poet and short story writer.

The American author of 'The Raven' (Film 1963) and 'The Murders in the Rue Morgue' also wrote 'The Fall of the House of Usher' (Film 1960), 'The Pit and the Pendulum' (Film 1961) and the 'Masque of the Red Death' (Film 1964).

The stories with dates next to them were made into horror films starring Vincent Price.

Edgar Allen Poe died in 1849.

Stephen King

Stephen Edwin King was born September 21 1947 in Portland Mine. Two years later, Mr King senior left and didn't leave a forwarding address.

King's first novel 'Carrie' (1974) had to be rescued from the trash by his wife Tabitha, but from there he went from strength to strength and hasn't stopped publishing since, even when he was run over by a camper van and almost killed!

    Some of SK's Books

  • 'Salem's' Lot' 1975

  • 'The Stand' 1978

  • 'The Dead Zone' 1979

  • 'Firestarter' 1980

  • 'Cujo' 1981

  • 'Christine' 1983

  • 'Pet Sematary 1983

  • 'It' 1986

  • 'Eyes of the Dragon' 1986

  • 'Misery' 1987

  • 'The Dark Half' 1989

Much of his work has been adapted for the screen with varying degrees of success. I enjoyed 'Salem's Lot' starring David Soul (usually shown in 2 parts), 'Cats Eyes' with a young Drew Barrymore, 'The Stand' mini series, 'Carrie' and 'The Dark Half' to mention just a few in no particular order, but of course they don't measure up to the books!

I'm a fan of Stephen King's work in case you hadn't guessed! And have most of his books. My favourites are 'Salem's Lot', 'The Stand' (uncut edition), 'It', 'On Writing' and the 'Dark Tower' series.
